Geography
Costa Rica is located in Central America. It shares a northern border with Nicaragua and a southern border with Panamá. Beaches can be found on both the Pacific and the Caribbean sides of the country.
Mountain Ranges
The mountain range that makes its way through the middle of the country is called Cordillera and has an average height of 1,300m. The Cordillera proceeds from the North to South and is of volcanic origin. Cloud forests and heavy rainfall can be found in this area. The highest peak in Costa Rica is Mount Cerro Chirripó with a height of 3,810m.
Carribean Coast
The Caribbean Coast is characterized by mangrove swamps, lagoons, sandy beaches and coral reefs. Large parts of the coast are protected and are considered national parks.
Pacific Coast
In contrast to the Caribbean, the Pacific Coast has many bays, islands and peninsulas. (Some examples include the Nicoya Peninsula in the North and Osa and Golfo Dulce Peninsulas in the South).
Weather in Costa Rica
The climate varies from region to region in Costa Rica, however only two seasons can be distinguished; the wet and the dry season. During the dry season from December to April, there is little rain. During the wet season (rainy season), which lasts from May until November, the sun typically shines in the morning but can quickly change to heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evenings. Because of its location, Costa Rica is in almost no danger of being hit by a hurricane. The last hurricane to hit Costa Rica was in 1996.
