Medical Spanish Program Costa Rica
This Medical Spanish program was implemented to help Medical professionals and students improve their knowledge of Spanish in an immersed setting. The program teaches a variety of topics so that the student will understand the culture as well as certain phrases. Topics such as Hispanics and their Health, Anatomic and Physiologic vocabulary, Conversations for Administrative Personnel, Conversations for Health Professionals, Medical Therapy, Laboratory Tests, and Patient Instructions, and much more.
The structure of the course begins 4 hours of general Spanish per day followed by 2 hours of classes concentrating on Medical Spanish.
In addition we offer observation opportunities (in Costa Rica is almost impossible to find hands on volunteer work) in local clinics and hospitals where you can practice what you have learned in the classroom. Here you will learn all the appropriate terminology needed to practice medicine. This is the most comprehensive program of its kind. There are some days when you will be observing in the hospital or clinics and listen what you have learned in class. Observations will take place twice a week for 2 hours per visit.
This program is geared towards those students who want to learn Spanish at a reasonable pace. It takes four weeks with 4 hours of group classes plus 2 hours of private Medical Spanish classes. The material covered will depend on the level of the student (intermediate or advanced). Different methods of teaching will be implemented according to the specific needs of the students, including audio lingual, audio visual, magisterial, immersion and communication systems. Each student will be provided with a grammar workbook and medical vocabulary textbook. Students will have time to discover San José in their free time, do some Spanish exercises or practice what they have learned in school by performing observations at local hospitals or clinics.
The students will obtain a list of basic vocabulary and a pamphlet containing dialogue and expressions used in the medical profession. The dialogue portion will represent a patient / doctor relationship and include acquiring a patient´s medical history, medications taken, aliments, symptoms etc., besides including the specific anatomical terminology.
