The Irazu Volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. From San Jose it is easy to get there, so it is a popular touristic attraction. On a clear day, usually early in the morning, it is possible to see both the Caribbean and the Pacific! The volcano has five different craters and has erupted frequently over the last decades. An interesting fact about the volcano is that in 1963 the volcano erupted on the day the US President John F. Kennedy arrived in Costa Rica for a state visit.The last eruption of the volcano happened in 1994 and lasted only a day.
Prices and transportation
The best way to get to Irazu from San Jose is with the public bus, this will cost you around US $5 and will take about 2 hours. Entrance to the volcano costs about US $10. You can also book a private tour, which is half a day and costs around US $49.
