Poás Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Po?s Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens
This is a combined tour of the Po?s volcano and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. It is also possible to visit the volcano and the waterfall gardens separately.
Po?s Volcano
The Poas Volcano is the second largest active crater in the world. Until this day, the volcano can spew sulfurous gasses and sometimes a geyser will rocket due to the pressure, there is no need to worry about getting wet, because the crater is so big so it will not reach you, but it is an interesting thing to witness. On a cloudless day, you can look inside the crater and see the lake.
Price for private half day tour is US $49 including transportation, entrance fee and guide.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens
This park is in the tropical rain forest of Braulio Carrillo. Mountainous trails take you on a tour into the forest. You can see five spectacular waterfalls, including Costa Rica's most famous; La Paz. However, there are not only waterfalls to be seen in this park, but also a butterfly farm and hummingbird garden (with hundreds of hummingbirds!).
If you prefer a private tour, the price is $80 per person, including transportation, entrance fee, guide and buffet lunch.
Prices and transportation
The combined tour will cost about US $105 and also includes a visit to Doka Estate, a famous coffee plantation close to the Poas volcano. We highly recommend you to take this private tour since it is cheaper than trying to arrange everything separately, plus you do not have to worry about a thing, even breakfast and lunch are included!
When you visit Po?s by public bus from San Jose, it will take you about 2 hours and it will cost around US $4 for the ride and US $10, half price for students with ID, for entrance into the volcano?s national park.
To visit the La Paz Waterfall Gardens by bus, it is advisable to take the bus for Puerto Viejo/ Sarapiqu?, which will cost about US $2 for the ride and about US $38 for the entrance fee. Note that the public bus only goes to the waterfall gardens at 6:30AM and 13:00/1:00PM. The bus back to San Jos? departs at 13:00/1:00PM and 18:30/6:30PM (while the park closes at 17:00/5:30PM).
